When you first learn that stockings can be used to combat circulation problems, vein disease, deep vein thrombosis, blood clots, and more, a little research will show you that there are actually two different types of these stockings: Compression stockings and anti embolism stockings.
What are compression stockings?
Compression stockings are made with highly durable, tight fabric. They’re tighter around the ankle and become gradually looser up the leg. The gentle squeezing of the leg aids blood flow back to the heart. Due to gravity, your leg veins have to work the hardest to get blood back up to the heart. Weakened valves in the leg can lead to blood pooling and varicose or spider veins. Compression socks support the valves by pressing blood upwards.
Compression stockings are intended for people who are up and walking around, although they also help people who are sitting for long periods. Compression stockings come in many forms with various compression levels. The higher compression socks require a prescription, but lower compressions can be purchased in a variety of locations.
What are anti embolism stockings?
Anti embolic stockings, sometimes called Ted hose, Ted compression stockings, or Ted anti embolism stockings, are stockings meant to be used by patients that are bed-bound or non-mobile. Typical users include the hospitalized, such as post-surgery patients, and nursing home residents.
Antiembolic stockings do not include the gradual compression that compression stockings do. Instead, they offer a consistent 8-18mmhg compression. If a bed-bound patient is having circulation issues, their legs may be raised to help them.
Anti embolism socks are typically made of cheaper materials than compression stockings and are only meant to be worn for a short amount of time by a bed-bound patient. They aren’t for daily use walking around.
Ted stockings vs compression stockings
The main difference between compression stockings and anti-embolism stockings is the level of compression and who they’re meant for.
Compression socks are made for people who are up and about, while anti embolic stockings are for bed-bound patients.
Compression socks have a gradient compression that becomes gradually looser up the leg.
Anti embolic socks have a consistent compression throughout.
Compression stockings are made with higher quality materials meant for long-term use, while anti-embolism socks are usually made of cheaper materials and are only intended for short-term use.
