Learn about the types of weight loss surgery
In order to lose weight and live healthier lives, more and more people are turning to weight loss surgery. In this post, we’ll explore some of the different options out there for
weight loss surgery.
Types of weight loss surgery
There are three main types of weight loss surgery: restrictive, malabsorptive, and implanting an electrical device.
Restrictive surgeries work by shrinking the size of the stomach and slowing down the speed with which you can digest food. Following surgery, the stomach could hold as little as an ounce of food, although it will later stretch to be able to hold 2 or even 3 ounces. The smaller your stomach is, the less food you can eat, and the more weight you lose.
Malabsorptive surgeries change how your body absorbs calories, typically by giving you a smaller stomach or bypassing part of the digestive tract. Due to side effects, this type of weight loss surgery is less popular.
Implanting an electrical device is a newer type of weight loss surgery. It works by interrupting signals in your nerves between your brain and stomach.
Examples of weight loss surgery procedures
A few popular
weight loss surgery options include:
Adjustable Gastric Banding – a type of restrictive weight loss surgery where a surgeon uses an inflatable band to squeeze the stomach into two sections, connected by a small channel. Patients can then only eat ½ cup or so of food before feeling full.
Sleeve Gastrectomy – a type of restrictive weight loss surgery where the surgeon removes 75% of the stomach, leaving only a “sleeve” or narrow tube, connected to the intestines.
Gastric Bypass Surgery – combines both restrictive and malabsorptive approaches. During this operation, the surgeon divides the stomach into two parts, an upper and lower section, and then connecting the upper directly to the lower section of the small intestine, creating a shortcut for food to the intestine and allowing the body to absorb fewer calories.
Vagal Blockade or vBloc – An operation where a pacemaker-like device is implanted under the rib cage and sends regular electrical impulses to the vagus nerve, which connects the stomach and brain, signalling the brain that the stomach is full.
Biliopancreatic Diversion – This is a more drastic version of a gastric bypass. The surgeon removes as much as 70% of your stomach and bypasses even more of the small intestine.
Gastric Balloon/Intragastric Balloon System – A type of restrictive weight loss surgery in which a deflated balloon is placed in the stomach through the mouth. Once there, it’s filled with saline solution that provides a sense of fullness, thereby curbing hunger.
AspireAssist – is a device that takes a malabsorptive/restrictive approach to weight loss. A tube is placed through an abdominal incision that has a disk-shaped port that sits flush against the abdomen outside. About 20-30 minutes after a meal, the patient attaches the tube to an external draining device that removes food matter into the toilet. The device, approved for weight loss in 2016 by the FDA, removes about 30 percent of calories consumed.
