If you are serious about losing your belly fat, a good place to start is by identifying which of the different types of bellies you have.
While your belly fat may just be the result of too much food and not enough exercise, there also could be a number of other reasons for it. Belly types can be used to determine the different belly fats that exist. While there are different belly types, ese types of belly fats can range from being the result of a past pregnancy, genetics, or hormones.
In this post, we’ll discuss four different types of bellies and give some tips on how to deal with each.
Belly Types
Every person’s body is different and has a unique type of belly. The following are four of the most common belly types:
Menopot
Before menopause sets in, many women carry some excess weight on their hips and thighs. Once menopause happens, both estrogen and testosterone levels plummet, leading to a loss of muscle mass and slowing of metabolism, which results in it being more difficult to process carbs and leads to additional fat storage. All of this could lead women to develop a round belly.
A good way to deal with this type of belly fat is simply walking while holding weights, a moderate exercise that will keep your heart rate down and won’t boost cortisol the way intense exercise would.
Post-Pregnancy Stomach Paunch or Lower Belly Bulge
During pregnancy, your stomach will stretch to allow for amniotic fluid, a widening uterus, and for the baby to grow inside you. After giving birth, things don’t necessarily go back to exactly where they were before, and many women have a bulge that develops which never seems to go away. If you are wondering “Why does my lower stomach stick out,” pregnancy may have been the cause.
This post-pregnancy bulge is partially due to hormones from your pregnancy, which cause insulin levels to go up and fat to be stored in your middle. Another common issue after pregnancy is diastasis recti, where your right and left abdominal wall muscles separate when the uterus stretches for the growing fetus.
If the latter is your issue, Kegels can help. Sit down in a chair and squeeze your pelvic muscles together like you’re trying to stop urinating, then try to squeeze through your pelvic floor and contract your stomach. Yoga also can be a useful exercise for diastasis recti. If exercise doesn’t help, tummy tuck surgery may be required.
The “Classic Apple”
About 50 to 60% of weight gain in the belly is down to genetics. If a lot of women in your family have big bellies, your DNA may not be in your favor when it comes to belly fat. While your genetics may predispose you to belly fat, that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. By maintaining a healthy diet and exercising, you can lose weight or prevent yourself from gaining it in the first place.
Bloated Belly
It may be that your belly is simply bloated from gas or fluid retention, not fat. If this is the case, it’s down to your diet. You may be bothered by certain foods, have a food allergy, or suffer from a condition like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).
Eating less protein and more fruits and vegetables may help, as will drinking plenty of water. You may also want to test cutting back on gluten or ask your doctor about celiac disease or food allergies.
