Learn about how to keep arteries and veins healthy
The human body is essentially one vast, complicated machine. If one part of the body isn’t working well, it can impact how the rest of the body works.
In this article, we’ll discuss vein health, why it matters, types of vein problems, and tips for healthy veins.
Why your vein health matters
The body’s circulatory system is a key system, as our blood brings oxygen and nutrients to other parts of the body. If this system isn’t running optimally, other parts of the body aren’t going to be at their best.
Venous insufficiency
When veins in our legs aren’t able to optimally pump blood back to the heart, it is known as venous insufficiency. The two most common types of venous insufficiency are:
1). Varicose veins
Varicose veins are a type of vein that become enlarged and twisted. Most often occurring in the legs, they can also happen in other parts of the body. Veins have one-way valves that help blood flow smoothly in one direction. When these valves weaken, blood can pool in the veins and cause them to enlarge. Varicose veins can be painful and may cause other problems, such as ulcers.
2). Spider veins
Spider veins are smaller and less visible than varicose veins. They typically look like a spider web or tree branch, and they’re found on the face, neck, chest, and legs. Spider veins can be caused by several factors, including genetics, age, pregnancy, weight gain, prolonged standing or sitting, and sun exposure.
How to strengthen veins and arteries
As venous insufficiency is the weakening of veins, it makes sense that you may be wondering how to make your veins stronger. Some tips as to how to improve vein health include:
Stay active: Don’t sit for long periods. If you sit at a desk all day, get up and walk around regularly.
Exercise: Getting the blood pumping is good for your circulation.
Keep hydrated: Blood with amply water in it is thinner and flows better.
Eat a healthy diet: Fruits and veggies are good for circulation
Use compression socks: These help with circulating blood back to the heart.
Don’t smoke: Smoke deoxygenates and thickens the blood, making it more difficult for your veins to move. At the same time, smoking makes your veins narrower and harder. Smoking also causes cancer.
