About Varicose Veins

Veins in the lower extremities (your hips, thighs, legs, ankles, and feet) carry blood from your legs to your heart. Types of veins in the leg include deep and superficial veins. In some people, the valves in the superficial veins don’t work properly, resulting in blood pooling in the legs. This pooling leads to increased pressure, resulting in enlarged, tortuous veins under the skin, called varicose veins.

Varicose veins are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. Symptomatic venous insufficiency and varicose veins can result in leg pain, cramping, heaviness, tiredness, itchiness, and leg swelling. Severe venous reflux can result in skin discoloration, severe swelling, and lower extremity wounds that do not heal well. Varicose veins usually develop in the legs and can be seen through the skin.

Varicose veins can be more than a cosmetic annoyance and can lead to more serious health problems without specialized treatment. They can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition called venous insufficiency.

Spider veins are smaller, red, purple, and blue vessels that also twist and turn. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin and can be visible on the legs and face.

Varicose Vein Treatment San Diego

At Kafri Wellness Center, we offer several different varicose vein treatments, such as endovenous ablation, phlebectomy, and sclerotherapy.

Endovenous ablation is a procedure to close off varicose veins. Endovenous means that the procedure is done inside the vein. Ablation means that we will use heat to damage and close off the vein by inserting a needle and wire into the vein. This procedure is not painful and is designed to ease pain, swelling, and irritation caused by varicose veins. Dr. Kafri and his team offer all forms of endovenous ablation, including Laser, Radiofrequency, and Steam ablation. The procedure does not require anesthesia, typically takes an hour, and patients may return home afterward. Many people work the next day. While there may be some discomfort for a week, you’ll be able to walk immediately after the procedure and do most of your day-to-day activities.

A Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure using a specialty hook to gently remove the varicose veins manually that are not too deep under the skin. Ambulatory phlebotomy is a method of removing large, bulging varicosities. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia administered in the doctor’s office.

Sclerotherapy is a form of vein treatment where the doctor injects medicine into the blood vessels’ lymph vessels that causes them to shrink. It is commonly used to treat varicose veins or so-called spider veins. Procedures are performed directly in the office, and anesthesia is not required. Patients have minimal pain and discomfort. There is no scarring whatsoever to worry about. There is also no downtime, so it is a good choice if people want to improve their bodies without having to take time away from work or family obligations.

Vein Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

Minor issues such as a blocked vein or damaged valve can be repaired to some extent through a combination of diet, prescription medicine, and surgery.

A vein usually takes a couple of days to heal.

There are other veins that already direct blood back to the heart, so when the abnormal vein is shut off, the other veins have an easier time carrying the blood out of the leg.

Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for leg vein issues. Dermatologists have continuously improved sclerotherapy over the years to make it safer and give better results. Sclerotherapy is used to treat varicose veins and spider veins

Typically, vein treatment will simply be closing a vein or veins using chemicals or radiofrequency that heats vessels to close veins. These procedures are virtually painless, as veins have no nerve endings.
