What Is Varicose Vein Treatment & Removal?

Endovenous laser treatment can target larger varicose veins in the legs. A laser fiber is placed through a catheter into the vein while the doctor watches it on an ultrasound display. This method is less painful than vein ligation and stripping and also has a shorter recovery period.

Some of the risk factors for spider and varicose veins:

  • Genetics/ hereditary
  • Excessive sitting/standing
  • Birth control
  • Obesity
  • Aging
  • Gender
  • History of blood clots
  • Hormonal influence from pregnancy, puberty, menopause

San Diego Varicose Vein Frequently Asked Questions

Varicose veins are bloated, swollen, and/or bulging surface veins caused by underlying vein disease. Varicose veins most often occur on the inside of the knee, the back of the calves, and the thighs. Varicose veins may also appear on the hands, and some women can develop them in the pelvic and buttocks areas. The size of abnormal veins is used to classify them. The largest veins are varicose veins, which cause a bulging/bump in the legs. Reticular veins are thinner and more bluish in color than varicose veins. Spider veins are the tiniest veins, measuring just 1-2mm in diameter, sometimes forming a web-like pattern on the skin surface.

Varicose veins can develop as a result of a variety of factors. Family history, advanced age, prolonged standing, pregnancy, hormonal changes related to ovulation or menopause, or an underlying vein condition are the most common causes. When the valve within a superficial leg vein is damaged and no longer functions properly, varicose veins form. These valves normally assist venous blood flow from the legs to the heart, but when they are damaged, blood flows backwards (venous reflux) and pools in the veins of the legs. Varicose veins form when these veins become enlarged and distended over time.

Varicose veins are a medical condition that, depending on the severity of the disease, can be symptomatic and painful. If you have any of the symptoms listed below, you may be suffering from a form of venous reflux:

Leg pain/aching/cramping
Leg itching/burning/numbness
Skin changes/discoloration
Leg Restlessness
Leg or ankle swelling
Heavy feeling in legs
Varicose veins
Spider veins

The development of simple, well-tolerated procedures for the treatment of varicose veins has been enabled by major advances in image-guided minimally invasive technologies. Endovenous thermal ablation, which uses a small catheter to heat the vein from the inside to permanently close the abnormal vein, is the most effective and commonly accepted treatment choice for varicose veins. This operation is conducted entirely in our office and is done with a local anesthetic (injection of lidocaine solution as the procedure site). This treatment takes about 45 minutes, and the patient can walk right out and go back to work the next day. Sclerotherapy (injecting a tiny amount of irritant into the vein to close it) or surface laser therapy are used to treat smaller veins like reticular veins and spider veins. Kafri Wellness Center has devoted its entire career to using these minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat venous disease.

During your visit, a comprehensive venous ultrasound will be administered in our office. This ultrasound will decide whether or not vein disease is present, as well as the extent of the disease. The best treatment options will be discussed with you and a treatment plan will be developed using the information from this ultrasound.

Sclerotherapy is the best treatment for varicose veins. This procedure involves injecting small to medium varicose veins with a solution that helps to close the affected veins.

Varicose veins only need treatment if they are causing you discomfort. If not, then you may not need to have treatment.

Though considered by some to be unsightly, varicose veins are not necessarily a sign of poor health.

Drinking water helps keep your veins healthy. Hydrating improves blood circulation by keeping it thinner and strengthens the muscles that support your veins.
