What is Endoveinous Ablation?
Endovenous ablation is a procedure to close off varicose veins. Endovenous means that the procedure is done inside the vein. Ablation means that we will use heat to damage and close off the vein by inserting a needle and wire into the vein. This procedure is not painful and is designed to ease pain, swelling, and irritation caused by varicose veins.
Dr. Kafri and his team offer all forms of endovenous ablation, including Laser (or EVLT), Radiofrequency, and Steam ablation.
Endovenous ablation benefits:
- No downtime
- No scarring
- Immediate results
- Performed in the doctor’s office
- Can be done on all skin types
- Minimal post-op pain and discomfort

El Cajon EVLT Frequently Asked Questions
What is a vein ablation?
A vein ablation is a process of cauterization to close varicose veins and treat symptoms such as swelling or pain. It is a non-invasive and safe option that leaves almost no scarring compared to surgery.
Is vein ablation painful?
Ablation is less invasive than standard surgery. Most of the veins treated are effectively invisible even by ultrasound 12 months after the procedure. Most patients report symptom relief and are able to return to normal daily activities immediately, with little or no pain.
How long does it take to heal from vein ablation?
You may have a bandage and some bruising along the vein that was treated. You will need to wear compression stockings for 1 week or more. You can do your usual activities, but avoid vigorous exercise for about 1 week. Most people can get back to their normal routines right away.
Why would someone have a vein ablation?
Varicose vein treatment (Endovenous Ablation of Varicose Veins) Endovenous ablation uses energy to cauterize (burn) and close varicose veins.
Doctors may use this treatment to help ease symptoms such as pain, swelling, and irritation. Ablation is safe, less invasive than surgery, and leaves virtually no scars.
Does vein ablation help blood circulation?
Yes, vein ablation treatment will help your circulation. This is because varicose veins cause scar tissue to form, leading veins to close. Vein ablation treatment uses radiofrequency or laser energy to heat and collapse those veins, allowing for proper blood flow and circulation.
How long will my leg hurt after vein ablation?
Most patients recover from vein ablation treatment with minimal or no problems. It’s normal to feel a tightening sensation in your leg after a couple of days; a sensation which may last for a few days. It is also common to experience cramping, bruising, and swelling.
How long do you have to be off work after an ablation?
Most patients can go back to work after 3-4 days.
Does EVLT require general anesthesia?
EVLT can be performed with the patient awake, requiring only local anesthesia via injections with a lidocaine-containing solution. You will also be given sedative pills the night before and two hours prior to your procedure. You’ll also be prescribed an anesthetic “cream” to dull your skin sensitivity to minimize the discomfort associated with needle injections.
What happens to the vein after it is closed off, or "ablated" by EVLT?
A vein treated by EVLT will remain closed for the rest of your life. As time goes by, the vein will get absorbed by the body to a certain extent. Years later, an ultrasound may be able to see the vein as a closed “cord” with no lumen. Sometimes, an ultrasound cannot detect the closed vein.
Vein Specialist San Diego
If you suffer from varicose veins, the San Diego vein specialists at Kafri Wellness Clinic may be able to help. Contact us today!
How long does an EVLT procedure take?
The San Diego vein specialists at Kafri Wellness Clinic do all EVLT procedures in one-hour sessions, which we feel is the optimal time for this procedure. Going any longer could cause back pain, hip pain, incontinence, fatigue, or other issues. If you have complex venous reflux anatomy with more than 2 or 3 veins to be treated, we may do two separate EVLT sessions.
Can you do both legs during the same EVLT procedure?
As the EVLT procedure causes tissue trauma, post-procedural pain, and discomfort, treating both legs at the same time would be overwhelming for most patients. For this reason, at the Kafri San Diego vein clinic, we treat one leg at a time with a recovery period in between.

Very professional office setting and staff. As a new patient I was greeted warmly, staff proficiently checked my vitals, EKG, reviewed meds which prepared Nurse Practicioner Kim (who was great -- 5 stars) to review my prious ultrasound, and performed the cardio exam. Kim was effecient, actively listened, was a clear communicator, and addressed my concerns. I highly recommend Dr. Kafri Heart Vascular Clinic.

All the staff were very helpful, patient, and friendly. They were also very accommodating with honoring my request to wait 5 minutes before taking my blood pressure so I could relax a bit to ensure a more accurate blood pressure reading. I REALLY appreciate that! 😊💜
