What factors are involved in the formation of varicose veins?

Varicose veins are bluish-purple veins that are seen or felt underneath the skin. They are dilated veins that, if left untreated, could result in deep vein thrombosis or serious blood clots. Around one in three people suffer from varicose veins, so it is a very common disorder that can happen to anyone.

Main Causes of Varicose Veins

So, we know that varicose veins are fairly common, but what actually causes this condition to occur? Veins are the vessels that carry blood throughout the body. The heart sends out oxygenated blood, and unoxygenated blood returns. Veins have one-way valves to prevent blood from backflowing. If the one-way valves are not working, it can cause blood to pool up and strain the vein. This is why the dilated varicose veins start to become visible under the surface of the skin.

What Factors Should You Look Out For?

Here are the most common risk factors that can cause varicose veins.

  1. Pregnancy – The pressure expended on the veins in the lower abdomen during a baby’s growth can increase blood pooling in the legs. It is common for women to develop varicose veins during this time, but they typically resolve themselves when the baby is born.
  2. Birth Control Pills – The hormonal fluctuations that occur alongside birth control pills can cause varicose veins.
  3. Genetics – This isn’t completely understood by science, but it is common for varicose veins to be passed through genetics. In other words, if your family members suffer from varicose veins, you likely will experience them at some point in your life.
  4. Obesity – Being overweight can increase the pressure on your veins and block the blood flow. This can cause varicose veins.
  5. Age – Growing older can cause varicose veins as the walls weaken and the valves begin to shut down.
  6. Desk Job – Sitting down or standing up for extended periods of time can raise the blood pressure in the legs, resulting in varicose veins in the legs.
  7. History of Vein Issues – If you have had blood clots or vein problems before, you are more likely to get them again.
  8. Damaged Veins – If your veins have experienced trauma, they can become weak and turn into varicose veins
