What are Compression Stockings?

Compression stockings are used to keep pressure applied evenly to the lower legs. This helps maintain a healthy blood flow and reduces any discomfort or swelling that comes along with vein disease or recovery from a vein procedure.

If you have a condition causing unhealthy blood flow to your legs, compression stockings could be recommended as a way to help ease recovery after you
have a procedure done.

Varicose veins are one of the most common vein disorders that require the use of compression stockings. If you’re wearing compression stockings because of a vein condition affecting circulation in your lower extremities, you may need to wear them for several years.

In some cases, compression socks may need to be worn throughout a lifetime to remain healthy and pain-free.

How to wear compression stockings

Learn more about the most common treatments for varicose veins

Compression stockings come in many different sizes, lengths, fits, and colors. They also come in different levels of compression, either a tighter or looser fit. Sometimes the fit tightness depends on the comfort and other times the tighter fit is recommended by your doctor depending on your symptoms.

Your legs will be measured to figure out which type of stockings you may need. The ones supplied by your doctor will always be tested by the doctor or nurse first to make sure they are the right fit for you.

When you wake up, you should put your compression stockings on in the morning and wear them throughout the day. At night, you can take them off just before bed. They should stay on the majority of the time. Many are quite comfortable and you will forget they are even there.

At all times you should have two pairs per leg that you are treating with compression. While your stockings are being washed, you do not want to have to go without them. We always recommend having at least two for each leg.

Your doctor will monitor your progress over time. Due to the recovery that comes with wearing them, you should have your legs remeasured and your stocking replaced every three to six months. You never want to end up with loose-fitting stockings due to swelling going down.

Compression Stocking FAQs

Compression stockings are considered to be medical-grade when they are 20-30 mmHg and more. Anything below this is just moderate compression, which is recommended for exercise and everyday use.

Compression stockings with relatively low compression levels can be purchased without a prescription at drugstores, medical supply stores, and online. By law, no prescription is required, but most pharmacies won’t dispense higher-level compression wear without a prescription.

Compression stockings gently squeeze your legs to move blood up your legs. This helps prevent leg swelling and, to a lesser extent, blood clots. If you have varicose veins, spider veins, or have just had surgery, your healthcare provider may prescribe compression stockings.

They can cause itching, redness, and irritation. Compression socks can aggravate skin irritation and also cause itching. When compression socks are improperly fitted, redness and temporary dents in your skin may appear on your legs at the edge of the sock’s fabric.
